This is True Volume 5: Cost of Being Poor Rising

This is True Volume 5: Cost of Being Poor Rising
Each volume of the This is True collection contains a full year’s worth of columns from This is True, plus many extra stories that didn’t make it into the column — newspapers have a strict space budget which Randy must adhere to, but sometimes there are just too many fun stories he can’t help but write about. You haven’t seen them all even if you’ve read every column online or in the newspaper. There are more than 500 True stories and headlines in each!
And these are no cheap pulp paperbacks. We specified non-petroleum ink to help reduce chemical use, and acid-free paper to help prevent yellowing of the pages. They’re “trade” (high-quality) paperbacks with stay-flat, laminated, four-color covers. Yes, it all cost us more to do it that way, but This is True is worth it! The books measure 5.5×8.5 inches, and are each 158 pages long. Each volume is just US$11 per copy.
158 pages, $11.00 + $2.75 shipping and handling (USA, International options available at checkout), published by Freelance Communications.

Uniquely Ouray: Reflections on Life in a Mountain County

Uniquely Ouray: Reflections on Life in a Mountain County
by Beth Paulson
Read this delightful collection of essays Beth wrote about life in Ouray, Colorado. These essays were published in the Ouray County Plaindealer between May, 1999, and January, 2007.
“Beth Paulson first saw the beauty of Ouray as a newcomer and then after moving here learned of its history and its dramatic environment. These beautifully-written articles take the reader down a wide variety of interesting paths in and around Ouray. They will be enjoyed by those who have lived here for many years, and to the newcomer they offer a path for discovery and a guide for exploring.”—Doris Gregory, historian and author, History of Ouray
“Beth Paulson’s monthly columns provided insights to life in Ouray County that ranged from observational to tender to incisive, and she’s still at it. The best of her excellent writing is compiled and organized by seasons in this book. Anyone who reads it will have a greater understanding and appreciation of what makes Ouray, Colorado, the wonderful—and unique:—place that it is.”—David Mullings, editor and publisher, Ouray County Plaindealer.

Barbed Wire and Wildflowers

Paul McCreary and Becky Klein McCreary have joined forces to create an enjoyable book of wild short stories and beautiful poetry.
Paul’s “Panama Madness” story starts this way: “Harris Cortez had a minor problem that would become major. One sweltering August night in Panama, a black mother Equatorial Wolf tarantula crawled across his face to the side of his head, paused, and deposited three eggs into his left ear.”
Whereas Paul’s prose is a bit barbed (and funny), Becky’s poetry is more contemplative:
Sweet Annie
racing wildly along fence rows
dancing around maypoles of gnarled posts
playing tag along churning streams
jumping the banks to show off in meadows
flirting and teasing the others
her spicy fragrance driving them mad.
